Timbuktu, the ancient trade and knowledge crossroad on the brink of the Sahara desert, has for centuries been capturing the imagination of westerners with it’s wealth and remoteness. Plenty of explorers set out discovering it, plenty failed. Even to this day its remote location far out in northern Mali makes many think twice before setting sail. It takes two days driving from Bamako in a good car, your bones well shaken up, but experiencing the views and people is priceless.
